Obtaining a Work Permit in Turkey From Abroad

According to Article 7 of the International Labor Law, a foreigner who wants to obtain a work permit from abroad must apply for a work visa at the Consulate or Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in the country where he/she currently resides and must give the 16-digit reference number he/she gets to his/her employer in Turkey.

After a foreign national applies for a work visa from abroad, the employer in Turkey must apply for the work permit for the foreign national via e-government with a 16-digit reference number within ten working days through the online system. After this application, all required documents must deliver to the Ministry in person or by mail within six working days.

Obtaining a Work Permit in Turkey

A foreigner residing in the country must have a residence permit of at least six months in order to obtain a work permit. The required work permit application for a foreign worker with a residence permit must be made by the employer to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security via the online system. 

The steps after this stage are the same for all transactions made in Turkey/abroad. The Ministry makes the necessary examinations and concludes. The documents required to obtain a work permit from abroad are the same as those required to obtain a work permit from abroad.

For the employer: Tax Registration Certificate, The Trade Registry Gazette of Turkey, detailing the current shareholding and capital structure of the entity, A balance sheet and a profit/loss statement for the most recent year, certified by the tax office or certified public accountant, Workplace activity certificate, Preliminary permission document (If the foreigner is a healthcare professional, a preliminary permit is obtained from the Ministry of Health; if the foreigner is an education Professional it must be obtained from the Ministry of National Education).

How Long Does It Take To Get Work Permit In Turkey?

The Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services finalizes the work permit applications by negotiating with the relevant ministries and authorities when necessary. The procedures regarding the duly made work permit applications are finalized by the Ministry within thirty days at the latest, provided that the required documents are submitted in full.

How Do I Extend My Work Permit?

Applications for the extension of the work permit must be submitted directly to the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services by the foreigner or the employer, together with the original of the previous work permit, the application form and the documents specified in the Regulation

Work permit and time extension applications must first be made online. In order for the work permit or time extension applications made online and pre-approved by the system to be considered valid, the barcoded application form created online must be signed by the foreigner and the employer and submitted together with the application form. It is submitted to the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services within six working days at the latest following the preliminary approval of the online application, in person or by mail, together with other documents specified in the annex of the regulation.

Applications for extension must be made no more than two months before the end of the leave period. Extension applications made within fifteen days at the latest following the expiry of the work permit will also be processed. Applications for extension of time made after that are subject to the principles applied to foreigners applying for the first time. For work permit extension applications made with a valid residence permit (as in applications made for the first time in Turkey), the necessary documents must be submitted to the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services within six business days following the application date. online application.

For an existing work permit, following the one-year legal work permit period, a two-year extension can be made, provided that it is to work in the same institution or organization and for the same profession. At the end of the statutory three-year work permit period, the current work permit can be extended for another three years to work with any employer for the same occupation. Foreigners who have been legally residing in Turkey for at least eight years without interruption or who have worked for a total of eight years with a work permit can apply for an indefinite work permit.

Work permit term extension application letter, Foreign personnel application for The Trade Registry Gazette of Turkey detailing the current shareholding and capital structure of the entity, if modified since the initial submission, Document attesting that the employer has no outstanding tax obligations (This information must be accessed by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services through the records of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance), The Social Security Institution registration number of the insured foreigner named in the application form, and information regarding whether or not the employer has fulfilled its social security obligations regarding the foreigner (This information must be accessed by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services through the records of the Social Security Institution).

Documents Required From The Foreigner At The Time Of Extension Applications

Copy of the passport,Previous work permit and cover letter, Residence permit for work, covering the term of the work permit issued by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services, Provisional membership certificate required from foreigners who are granted work permits for work as an engineer, architect, or city planner, as per article 36 of Law no. 6235 on Turkish Association of Chambers of Engineers and Architects

Employers should not forget to employ a foreign worker, you must employ five Turkish workers for every foreign worker you employ.
